Inversion Table Therapy
When the body's weight is suspended from the lower body the pull of gravity may decompress the
joints of the body below the anchor. Hanging by the feet, using an inversion table, causes each joint in the body to be
loaded in an opposite manner to a normal standing position. Inversion table therapy of this sort tractions the spine and
gently stretches the muscles and ligaments of the body for relief of back pain.
Inversion therapy is particularly beneficial for the spine because it relieves pressure on the discs and nerve roots. This allows discs to recover lost moisture and to return to their original shape, decreasing the pressure they can exert on nerves. While lying down does remove the pressure of gravity, the traction produced while lying on an inversion table also removes the pressure of tight muscles and allows the possible space between spinal discs to be realized.
The ligaments crossing the joints, which hold the bones of the spine and legs together, under traction are subjected to pulling forces. The intensity and duration of traction can cause stimulation for the strength of ligaments to increase helping to make your spine healthier than it is right now.
Benefits of using Inversion Table Therapy:
- Improves chiropractic treatment response
- Speeds healing of disc protrusions within the spine
- Improves:
- Posture
- Flexibility &
- Blood flow
The traction produced by using inversion table therapy can be a tool to assist in correcting misalignments of the spine. This may help to maintain proper posture. Misalignment of the hips and spine can also be a source of inflammation, disc protrusions and pain. This is another therapy that can be used with chiropractic care for healing your back condition.
Static-active stretching methods, impossible to perform while standing, can be performed while inverted for the spinal flexors, side flexors and extensors, and hip flexors. This helps your flexibility due to the increased spacing in the joint which occurs in response to inversion table therapy, the muscles crossing that joint are pre-stretched, and as such, experience a greater lengthening compared to the equivalent joint angle while under no traction (lying down) or while being compressed (standing).
If a lower back spinal disc is deranged and inflamed, the blood supply to the disc will be compromised setting you up for further disc degeneration. Inversion table therapy increases the blood flow to the spinal discs bringing nutrition and allowing toxins to escape. This allows for the inflammation to decrease and healing can now occur.
Health Risks to Consider: People who have heart disease, high blood pressure, eye diseases (such as glaucoma), or are pregnant are at higher risk for the dangers related to inversion therapy and should consult with our doctor about it first. Such people would have to progress very slowly, starting at very light levels of inversion. The first time anyone tries inversion therapy with gravity, they should be sure to have someone standing by, in case assistance is required to get out of the apparatus, or if health problems are experienced.
